So often I hear parents comment that they feel like they see so many lyrical and contemporary solos or there are questions about what has happened to tap and why does it seem it is becoming less and less popular.  So I was curious, what styles are most popular and how much does it vary from age to age?  After taking a look at information from two National Dance Competitions, the findings are below.

Dance Solos 2

Observations:

Jazz:  It doesn’t surprise me that jazz is so popular among the minis – it’s fun and entertaining.

Tap:  What is happening with tap?  I was surprised these numbers were so low.  Are dancers not as drawn to tap, is it that dancers/dance teachers think it won’t “win” or do very few dancers think tap is their strongest style?

Lyrical and Contemporary:   The most popular and therefore; I would think more competitive and requires a dancer to work even harder to be memorable and stand out from the crowd of so many solos in the same style.

Were you surprised by any of the findings?  Would this affect the style of solo you would choose for a dancer?

  1. My dancer is not a tapper. She usually does a lyrical or contemporary solo, but I love it when a jazz or tap solo takes the stage. It breaks up the drama of contemporary and lyrical.

  2. My daughter is 5 and this is her 2nd year to do a tap solo. Last weekend we were at a competition and she placed low for her. When I received the judges comments I found out why. 1 of the judges were calling flaps shuffles and the other 2 judges really never said to much. We will not be attending that competition again next year! I think many judges are not skilled in tap so it doesn’t win like it should. My daughter loves tap and is very strong at it for her age I know she will always want to do a tap solo!
