Dancer’s Name: Natalie
State: North Carolina
Studio: Championz Cheer and Dance
How many years of dance? 5 years
How many hours do you dance a week? About 13!
Favorite style of dance and why? Sassy jazz! I love to be able to show my personality and showmanship while doing something I love!
What is your favorite dance you have performed? “Here I Go Again”! It was one of my group dances last year, and was a jazz/rock dance! Our first competition we won the Dance Off for 13 and Over, the next we won the award for highest score/most entertaining for the 13 and overs! And then at another we got the highest score in the WHOLE competition with a score of 294.5! It was so much fun!
What is your favorite dance skill to perform? There are so many…probably my turns, it shows my strength, control, and my technique.
Who inspires you? Sophia Lucia, Hayden Hopkins, Jaycee Wilkins, Dylynn Jones, Brynn Rumfallo, Jenna Valenzuela, my dance teachers, and most of all…Miss. Kelli. She was my first dance teacher and I have gone so far with her help, I don’t know what I would do without her! When she had to move to Miami for her PhD last year, she still skyped with me every week for my solo!
If you could work with any choreographer, who would it be and why? Alexa Moffett, she has such amazing choreography and all of her dancers are SO flexible!!
My favorite part of the dance year is… finding out my songs, costumes, teachers, and competitions! Also, just competition season overall, I love performing, it makes me so happy!
What is your favorite snack for dance events? Apples! I don’t like to eat a lot on competition day, but since I need to eat something I usually just get an apple or some type of fruit to eat!
What do you like most about attending dance competitions and conventions? Meeting new friends and performing. I have made so many new friends because of dance, I’m so blessed that God gave me this talent <3
If you could be a choreographer for your studio, what song and style of dance would you choose for your dance? “Brotsjor” and it would be that weird type of contemporary that is always so unique and captures your attention! This song has such an amazing beat, it would be awesome to choreograph a dance to it!
If you could go to lunch with any other dancer, who would it be and why? Sophia Lucia, hopefully she could give me some tips on turns, and she seems really fun from the videos I’ve seen and from when she was on Dance Moms.
What is your favorite dance TV show? DANCE MOMS!!!!!!!!
What is your favorite dancewear? I don’t have a certain brand, but I have a pair of fringe dance shorts my mom and I made, that are so fun to wear!
What is your favorite dance moment? My first year doing a solo (my 3rd year dancing) I won the highest scoring routine of the competition! It was such a surprise and I was speechless…literally…which all my teachers will tell you doesn’t happen often!
When you’re not dancing, what do you like to do? Edit photos! I have come a long way in photo editing and I really enjoy doing it! Also, I like to draw! Usually, I’m drawing something related to dancing, but that’s natural for me!
Natalie’s Mom: Linda
I knew my daughter loved to dance when we first went to our studio and she took her first class. It was all she talked about. Before I knew it she was competing and on the unlimited dance pass that first year. It was all over then!
My favorite part of the dance year is when competition season starts. I love to see the results of all their hard work live and in action! The days leading up to the first competition of the year are both exciting and nerve-wracking!
My favorite costume she wore: Oh my gosh! Almost impossible to pick just one! I guess if I had to pick, I would say the “fireman’s” costume she wore in a Jazz routine to the song “Fire Burning.” We had not, and still have not, seen anything like it at any competition. It was new and different and the judges at every competition LOVED it.
If I could choose a song and style of dance for my dancer, it would be Jazz. Her solo song this year is Miss Independent by Kelly Clarkson. She can show her personality and her sass and just takes command of the stage. It amazes me what she can do onstage and how she shows no fear and no nerves.
My favorite style of dance to watch is basically any style of dance where the dancer is completely INTO it. I love watching a dancer that is just completely taken over by the music and the choreography and makes the audience also buy into it.
When I first became a Dance Mom, I didn’t know how much time I would be spending at the studio! It quickly became a second home for both of us!
My favorite thing about being a Dance Mom is seeing her excitement when she gets to perform. I love seeing her onstage. She has been blessed with incredible talent and I love that she is able to use that talent and that it brings her so much joy!
My best tip for fellow dance parents is let your child do what they love! Don’t make them take tap if they don’t like tap. Dance for a child should be about doing what THEY love, not doing what YOU love.
Aside from being a dance parent, I like to travel and spend time with the REST of my family!
Linda & Natalie, thank you so much for sharing your experience with us! It is so fun to read the dancer’s answers and to hear Dance Moms reflect on their experience as well.
