Dancer’s Name: Madisyn Hostler
Studio: Royal Dance Works
How many years of dance? 7
How many hours do you dance a week? 13-16
One Saturday a month we have cleanup for anywhere from 3-4 hrs for competition routines.
Favorite style of dance and why?
This was the hardest question. I love Tap, Hip Hop, Contemporary and Jazz. I have amazing teachers that make each style of dance so much fun.
What is your favorite dance you have performed?
My solo, to Big Noise and it’s jazz. Thank you to Mrs. Susan Allen for teaching this wonderful dance and never giving up on me during the long times when I didn’t think I would make it through. I’m honored that she was able and willing to do one for me and I can’t wait for her to see me perform it live.
What is your favorite dance skill to perform?
Turns. I love doing Pirouettes. I also love tapping..anytime I can tap somewhere I do, even in stores..lol
Who inspires you?
My best friend Teagan Jaffrey at Dance
If you could work with any choreographer, who would it be and why?
Twitch. I met him when I went to the NRG Convention and had more fun and learned so much from him. He is so good at other styles of dance too, so it would be fun to learn from a very well rounded dancer.
My favorite part of the dance year is…
Doing Recital. I love rehearsals, getting dolled up, laughing and supporting my teammates and other friends from the studio. I especially love the after party we have right after the last show of the Recital. We all come back to Royal and our awesome Hip hop teacher Tony Suski does the DJ ing and we have pizza and water and have a light show along with dancing til around midnight. It is the best night ever.
What is your favorite snack for dance events?
Apples with peanut butter.
What do you like most about attending dance competitions and conventions?
I love everything from getting up and getting ready, to the excitement of performing a new routine, to sitting with my team waiting for the awards ceremony. I also love watching all the other studios and getting to meet new people. I love conventions because you always learn something new and it’s fun to take back the skills and use them the next time in class.
If you could be a choreographer for your studio, what song and style of dance would you choose for your dance?
I would choose Contemporary and the song would be Madness.
If you could go to lunch with any other dancer, who would it be and why?
I would love to go to lunch with Maddy from Abby Lee Dance Company because I think she represents dance in a very good way. She is a humble winner and loser. I would like to know how she stretches everyday to stay so limber.
What is your favorite dance TV show?
Dance Mom’s is my favorite dance show, but I also enjoy Dancing with the Stars and of course So You Think You Can Dance.
What is your favorite dancewear?
Sew Fierce by Stacey, here in Glendale Az. She made my solo costume and makes the most awesome dance outfits that are custom made all the way down to the pattern and color you want. She has made some pretty amazing outfits for dancers all over the United States.
What is your favorite dance moment?
Getting my first solo and working on it. I worked 6 months on it and to watch myself get better each month is my highest achievement in dance. Solos are hard because you’re the only one dancing and never get a break for however long you’re dancing. It has been a huge growing experience and I can’t wait to perform it in a competition this month for the first time. My goal is to simply get through the entire dance without forgetting anything. If I accomplish that, nothing else about awards matters.
When you’re not dancing, what do you like to do?
School work. Actually anything Math related I love doing. I also take a master art class once a week and love to draw and use my imagination with artwork. And on the weekends when I’m not dancing at the studio I love making my own dances up.
Madisyn’s Parents: Natalie & Vincent Hostler
I knew my daughter loved to dance when…
she started walking she would dance around all the time and was always on her tip toes too. She would hear music and just start twirling and making her dance moves up.
My favorite part of the dance year is:
The Recital because I love to see how much she has grown throughout the year. I love getting together for the 4 days we rehearse and then have a bunch of shows. I love to see all the dancers supporting each other watching and cheering each other on. I love how all the parents volunteer and help with anything that’s asked of us.
My favorite costume:
My favorite costume would be her solo costume. It is her first solo ever and it represents her personality to the tee. The song is Big Noise by Better Midler and it’s a very fast jazz dance. She was in a group dance last year that did a jazz routine to City Lights and I loved the glitzy cute jazzy costume they wore. They all looked like the Rockettes.
If I could choose a song and style of dance for my dancer, it would be:
I would pick the song Tell Me Tell Me by *NSYNC and the style would be Hip Hop. Madisyn has really allowed herself to let free and has become quite a hip hopper over the last year and watching her move is exhilarating. She shows her true self dancing hip hop and it seems to come naturally to her.
My favorite style of dance to watch is:
Hip Hop. Again the moves these kids are learning are by far not easy and to watch them embrace the choreography and allow themselves to move to every beat is exciting. No two moves are alike and your always on your toes for more.
When I first became a Dance Mom, I didn’t know…
This was going to become a lifestyle. I would have never guessed I would be taking my daughter to dance ever day during the week for 3 and sometimes 4 hours a day after school. I wouldn’t change any of it for anything. I love being able to be a part of what she loves and to watch her grow with this journey we are on together. I also didn’t think she would ever be at such a prestigious dance studio and get the training she gets. We are truly blessed being a part of Royal Dance Works.
My favorite thing about being a Dance Mom is:
Everything that comes with it. I didn’t believe I was a dance mom until this year. I love so many things about being a dance Mom, but if I had to give one reason it would be the friendships you build with all the other parents and how we all take care of each other’s kids and support each other’s kids. That bond to me is priceless.
My best tip for fellow Dance Mom/Dad..
Would be to always support your dancer no matter what. Always stay grounded and keep your child grounded because being humble in the dance world will get you a lot farther, than being nasty and uptight about everything. Make sure to always embrace each and every moment because no two are alike and each are milestones you will always take with you.
Aside from being a dance parent, I like to…
volunteer at my daughters school any chance I can get, whether it be in the classroom or on a field trip. I love spending one on one time with Madisyn doing even the most simple thing such as watch one her favorite movies or going to yard sales. She loves to do this when we get a chance because we make it into a game.
Thank you Madisyn and Natalie for sharing your experience with us. Madisyn, it sounds like you all have an exciting year ahead with performing your first solo. Congratulations!
